This ONE Tool Saved My Life

Okay, “saved my life” might be a slight exaggeration… but in the world of cabinet painting, furniture painting and DIY furniture refinishing, the 3M Hand-Masker is basically a superhero. Prep is one of those boring steps nobody loves, but if you skip it, you’ll regret it when overspray hits where it shouldn’t.

If you’ve ever spent an hour masking furniture for painting—taping edges, laying plastic, re-taping when it’s crooked—you know the pain. I have seen others use newspaper or aluminum foil to mask off pieces, but let me tell you about an easier way!

The 3M Hand-Masker changes everything. It holds your tape and masking paper together, it feeds them out in one smooth motion, and slices them clean with a built-in blade. It’s one of my favorite paint prep tools because:

  • It’s FAST. You can mask a whole dresser’s worth of drawers in minutes OR an entire kitchen in an hour or two.

  • It’s clean. Crisp lines, no paint sneaking under. Once you learn the hand motion of holding it and cutting it, it’s a piece of cake to use.

  • It’s versatile. Can be loaded with either plastic or paper and any kind of tape. Works for brushing and spraying projects.

  • It’s reusable. Mine’s been through literally thousands of jobs and it’s still going strong! When the blade gets dull, you can replace it. (It takes years for it to get dull enough to replace)

If you want to make painting prep quick and frustration-free, this is the tool to grab. Here’s the link! (it is a commissionable link)

I like to say that I am addicted to potential. Whether it’s transforming dated furniture, bringing life back to tired rooms, or reimagining an entire home, I thrive on envisioning improvements. Art and design have always been my truest forms of expression since I was very young. After college, I started my career in Tech and then pivoted to the furniture industry for several years, where I uncovered a passion for vintage pieces. Going out on my own and creating Styled by Austin has been the most rewarding part of my life, and I truly enjoy what I do.
